Abstract
We study failure mechanisms of electroactivated polymeric thin layers. As in typical technological applications we suppose that the layer is prestrained and that only an internal region of the layer is activated. We describe the possibility of both pull-in and wrinkling instabilities lead- ing to failure. In accordance with the experiments, we show the existence of an optimal prestrain corresponding to the largest actuation. Despite the simplification of our model, a satisfactory agree- ment with experiments is obtained.
