Abstract
An airborne volatility system, comprising an optical particle counter (0.05 ≤ r ≤ 1.5 μm) and four heated intake tubes, has been mounted in the UMIST aircraft and used to investigate the vertical structure and composition of atmospheric aerosol, in semi-rural northern England during a period of a subsiding air mass. Large variations were observed in the vertical profiles of the aerosol which depended upon the thermodynamic structure of the atmospheric boundary layer. Differences in aerosol composition were also noted between observations within the mixed layer and above the main inversion.
