Abstract
Vanilloid receptors are a family of six cell-surface, ligand-gated, cation channels, in which the ligand binding site appears to be on the intracellular face of the membrane. The archetypal member of the family is the TRPV1, also known as the VR1 or capsaicin receptor, for which much descriptive information has been accumulated. Many other members of the family, however, remain "orphans" albeit with some evidence for regulation by physical and chemical means (heat and protons, respectively)..
