Abstract
Infection with the genus Fasciola (P. hepatica in temperate climates., F. gigantica in the tropics) is an important cause of clinical disease and of economic losses in farmed ruminants. Fasciolosis is, at present, controlled mainly by the lise of flukicidal drugs, administered strategically, following information provided by forecasting systems, and/or for treatment of clinical cases. However, there are emerging factors which will make complete reliance on flukicidal drugs less desirable, and vaccination has the potential to be a viable alternative control method. In this review we outline some of the studies being carried out on immunising ruminants against liver fluke infection and assess the prospects for vaccines becoming available as tools for the control of fasciolosis.
