Abstract

Tower of Pigeons was commissioned for the Bangers and Crash percussion ensemble. The conception of the piece was to compose for percussion with as little attack or striking of instruments as possible. The result is a piece that utilises superball mallets and extended approaches to create a dense, intricate, and enveloping sound. Wolf tones and dissonant overtones are embraced to evoke the image of the piece's title; a reference to the notion of finding hope in the alienating spaces of modern cities, like birds nesting in a high-rise tower.
