Abstract
This paper proposes that economic factors be considered when deciding on the level of 'first-off' inspection to which regularly renewed processes should be subjected. It is shown that the level of inspection can be fixed in such a way as to optimise the economic performance of the process. A suitable function for optimisation is derived and examples of optimal solutions are presented and discussed.
