Abstract
Building conservation is a growing sector in the conservation industry and improved technical excellence will lead to economies in building renovation. Currently the problems in this area have to do with lack of expert knowledge when it comes to the repair and maintenance of the structures. There is a need for improved knowledge and understanding of the appraisal of historic buildings in accordance with specified standards, which will optimise appropriate economic repair and maintenance strategies. The objectives of this paper are to describe the development of a multimedia database that facilitates the representation of standardised information and processes that are involved in building renovation projects and incorporates: 1. A graphical user interface (GUI) that provides user-friendly access to/ retrieval of all project related data via the WWW; 2. Quality Assurance procedures underpinning the monitoring and control of historic buildings; 3. Information necessary to implement a complete structural analysis.
