Abstract

The proliferation of short-lived electronic devices is resulting in mounting levels of e-waste worldwide. Increasingly, these products have LCD screens. The raw materials used are Critical Raw Materials and of high importance to the EU economy. There are high risks associated with their supply and disposal, so need to be extracted safely. The Circular Economy (CE) is a sustainable solution and a financial strategy that facilitates the transformation of the existing linear system. Dismantling LCDs is labour intensive but there are also opportunities to reduce logistics cost in their second life. An efficient process for the extraction of these critical materials is needed. This study aims to investigate how companies plan to comply with relevant EU directives related to this problem, and finding potential solutions to the barriers currently faced by the electronics industry in Ireland.
