The conference addressed themes of liminality, marginality and thresholds in Irish and European literature and culture: Paper title: Imill, Impireacht agus Náisiúntacht i Smaointeoireacht Eoin Mhic Néill. This paper examines MacNeill s concerns about the marginal position the Irish language and literature and his efforts through writings and work in the Gaelic League to address this issue. His attempts to promote pride in a Gaelic identity and counteract provincialism were particularly evident during the League s campaign to have Irish designated a compulsory subject for matriculation to the NUI. The anti-imperialism evident is his writings became increasingly evident in the run up to the 1916 Rising and contributed to the case for his subsequent internment.
