Abstract
Sharma's theory of near resonant energy exchange has been tested by measuring the rates of vibrational energy excitation in the molecules CO2 and COS using hydrogen and its isotopes and isomers as collision partners. The calculated rates agree well with experiment in the CO2 systems, but fail for those using COS.
