SWOT Analysis as a Tool for Strategic Planning A Case Study : Misurata Airport

SWOT analysis is used to help decision makers in the industrial and service institutions, to make the appropriate decisions when trying to improve performance within an organization. This analysis is used particularly in strategic planning. It is based on the identification of two main factors, each of which is divided into two factors; one of them cares about the internal factors, and the other interest in external factors. These factors are the strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats.  In this paper, Misurata International Airport (MRA) has been selected, as a case study for the application of SWOT analysis. The airport has capabilities and infrastructure suitable for operating, especially that it has a runway with length 3,700 meters, and this is quite sufficient to receive different types of aircraft, and the strength and surface of the runway is in conformity with international standards and allows it to receive large loads, especially the processes for air cargo. In addition to its location is excellent for the city and the country as well. There are several large projects in the city such as iron and steel company, commercial port as well as Free Zone. In addition the airport has enough space for expansion to about 700 hectares. In contrast, the airport does not have a suitable terminal, currently there is a small and old terminal, as well as critical security and political conditions in the country. This paper is a part of the doctoral thesis being carried out by the researcher during the coming period entitled Efficiency Improvement Through Implementation of Strategic Quality Management.
