Abstract

This paper provides a summary of approaches to environmental noise control at airports across the world. Results are reported from an international survey of noise abatement strategies across 20 different airports (10 in the US, and 10 in Europe). The survey considered general aspects of noise control, as well as specific questions related to noise abatement procedures, noise limits and curfews. Participants were asked their opinion on the impact of the ICAO Balanced Approach, and, where appropriate, Regulation 598/2014 in Europe. Although only a snapshot of activities across the world is presented, results indicate a wide array of noise abatement procedures are being implemented. Results also suggest that while the ICAO Balanced Approach has been widely accepted in the European approach to noise abatement, it has yet to be fully embraced in the U.S., with half of U.S. based respondents reporting that they are not familiar with this approach.
