Abstract

Among the benzenoid hydrocarbons 1,2,3-triaza derivatives are scarce and are confined to 1,2,3-triazanaphthalene derivatives and a few 1, 2,3-triaza-anthracene compounds. The 1,2,3-triazolium-1-imide moiety is a useful 1,3-dipole which provides entry to the rare 1,2, 3-triazine system. The authors have now introduced the reactive 1, 3-dipole entity into the phenanthrene series by generating compounds from 2,2'-diphenyldialdehyde bis-arlhydrazones. In this series, the synthon provides scope for building derivatives of the 1,2, 3-triazatriphenylene system since its chemistry is dominated by the need for preservation of the phenanthrene moiety.
