Special Study option in Community Learning- Teaching Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation to School children

This Special Study Module Option (SSM) centres around medical students teaching school children how to perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).  The SSM runs over eight weeks. In the first two weeks students are introduced to the concept of the SSM and have a workshop exploring the issues around Community Learning.  Weeks 3 and 4 are devoted to learning the skill of CPR and learning how to teach a clinical skill.  Students then have to liaise with a local national school, organise the teaching session, draw up a lesson plan, resource materials,  deliver the session, collate feedback, devise a group poster or video log describing the endeavor and write a reflective diary on the value of the experience to them personally.  A unique feature of this SSM is that the CPR teaching is delivered through Irish in Irish speaking national schools.    The presentation will be in two parts. Part 1: Presented by Andrew Carroll on behalf of the Second Year Medical students. This group of students are preparing to go out to the school.  They will discuss their motivations, expectations, learning objectives, the techniques they are using to provide this community service and reflect on what they have learned to date.Part 2: Presented by Craig Mac Liathain on behalf of the First Year Medical student group.  These students have already been to the school and will present their experience of actually teaching the school children. They will also show a brief video of them in action and afterwards will reflect on their experiences and talk about what they enjoyed and what needs to be changed. They will also present some information on the views of our community partners; the children and the school principals The SSM organizer Dr. Maureen Kelly will briefly reflect on her experience of running the project.
