Abstract
This proof-of-concept study is to determine if the sensor system can detect neonatal startle reflex movements, with a view to using this data to inform a care unit noise reduction strategy. This paper will describe the development process and underlying physical principles of the sensor technology, and present initial findings on its suitability for neonatal movement monitoring. The minimum change in force detectable by the sensor system through a mattress was measured as. This suggests that this POF sensor setup can reliably detect the subtle movements made by neonatal infants in this scenario.
