Abstract

This conclusion presents closing thoughts of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book looks at some possible futures for the Communications media in China in the context of rapid technological change and the internationalization of regulations governing media markets. It suggests that a combination of unprecedented forces has seriously diminished the capacity of the Chinese nation-state to manage its media sector. The book suggests that the development of good content and viable content industries ultimately depends on creating an environment in which both innovation and regulation are complementary. It also suggests that the current relationship between governance, convergence and the content industries requires re-configuration in order to produce 'best practice' for media in China. Convergence is a classic 'challenge and opportunity' moment for the industry. The book proposes that the notion of governmentality, allied with what might call the promotional state, holds a certain explanatory potential.
