Abstract
A previously unknown bacterial disease of seawater farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has recently been described. Standard biochemical tests were carried out on the isolated bacterium but it was not possible to assign the organism to a genus on the basis of these tests. We determined the nucleotide sequence of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene of this organism. The phylogenetic relationship of this organism was then inferred by comparison with other published sequences and was found to be most similar to Streptobacillus moniliformis, Sebaldella termitidis (= Bacteroides termitidis), Leptotrichia buccalis, Propionigenium modestum and to Fusobacterium spp.
