Abstract

The role of inductors with variable inductance to implement harmonic filtering over a wide power range was analyzed. Three of the various configurations of variable inductors were studied: an inductor with constant air-gap in the saturating region, a stepped air-gap inductor (swinging inductor), and a sloped air-gap (SAG) inductor. Each of them had a variable inductance versus current characteristics suitable for harmonic filtering and the inductance value was dependant on the load. Results show that the SAG inductor had suitable inductance versus current characteristics to provide power factor correction to meet harmonic limits over a wide power range.
