Abstract
This paper describes an automated procedure of diagnosing power plant alarm systems. It comprises a network search implemented in Prolog which searches backwards from a specified main effect (e.g. alarm) and determines all the basic events which result in this top event. Temporal effects due to the delay elements are included. Sample results, taken from comprehensive test results of the system, are used to show how the diagnosis system can be used to generate the solutions for both single and multiple output events. Future direction of the research work and the inclusion of the results in a real time expert system for alarm suppression is discussed.
