PREP4Work: A social skills intervention to prepare adults with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities to access the workplace

Abstract

There is a clinical and empirical need to explore evidence-based interventions to support socially significant skills and inclusion for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD in adults is associated with underemployment and unemployment, as well as community participation restrictions. This chapter presents PREP4Work, a technology-aided and evidence-based intervention package aimed at improving social skills and fostering workplace inclusion for adults with ASD. PREP4Work also employs a variety of generalization promotion strategies that support learners in the transfer of skills to everyday use. Results across several evaluation studies have shown a significant increase in social skills, with evidence of skills generalizing to natural environments. This intervention contributes to the development of an evidence base for technology-aided interventions to improve employment skills and promote social inclusion for adults with ASD within the community.
