Abstract
This volume is comprised of a selection of papers presented at plenary sessions of the First International School of Rural Development, which was convened at the University College Galway during July, 1991. Each of the speakers was given a specific brief with regard to their presentation. In that way it was possible to construct a coherent picture of the current plight of rural areas in some of the most advanced economies in the world, the roles which rural areas in these countries are expected to fulfil in the future, the nature of the policies being pursued to achieve these goals, the body of theoretical knowledge that informs and guides the formation and implementation of rural development policies and the manner in which they may be evaluated. These topics are discussed in detail in the 18 chapters of this book. -from Editors
