Abstract

Often used in attempts to merge theory with practice and to collaboratively generate solutions to practical problems, participatory and action research have emerged as leading approaches within the social and behavioral sciences. While there is no one definitive form of action or participatory research, this article focuses on participatory action research (PAR) and highlights its key features and functions, drawing on examples of its application. An overview of some of the studies and settings within which PAR has been frequently used is presented. The article concludes by reviewing significant challenges and opportunities for researchers employing these participatory and action research methods within the social and behavioral sciences.
