Abstract

Ireland is still growing its investments in science, building optics research, and promoting industrial collaborations. There are seven universities in Ireland, and all have some activity in photonics. In addition, several of the Institutes of Technology have active applied optics programs. This diversity helps to ensure that optics education is widespread. The Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has established several cross-institutional collaborative centers to achieve the critical mass of researchers required for some areas of research. The largest concentration of optics researchers work on many of the key aspects of photonics, ranging from the theory of quantum processes and materials at the atomic level, to optoelectronic and optical components and subsystems, to advanced communications systems. They are also leading PiFAS (Photonic Integration from Atoms to Systems), a strategic research cluster funded by SFI.
