Abstract

The homogeneous broadening of the 2E→4A2 transition on Cr3+ ions in high-field sites in a mullite ceramic and in the mullite mother glass are measured and compared. An additional broadening mechanism appears to be present in the glass phase, this has an approximately linear dependence on temperature and is particularly noticeable at low temperatures. This observation is consistent with the conclusion of a recent study of line broadening in chromium-doped ED-2 glass and with measurements made in recent years on rare-earth-doped glasses at low temperatures.
