Non-Profit Organisations and Public Service Provision: The Performance Management Challenges of Hybrid Organisations

Research output: Chapter in Book or Conference Publication/ProceedingConference Publicationpeer-review

Abstract

While performance management in the public sector and in non-profit organisations (NPOs) has been widely examined and continues to attract considerable attention from the research community, sub categories or hybrid organisations with a mix of organisational characteristics have not attracted the same attention. NPOs involved in the provision of, state funded, public services are one such hybrid organisational category. Building from a preliminary case study in the intellectual disability sector in Ireland, this paper explores the particular attributes of such hybrid organisations. Five characteristic organisational attributes are identified as central to the understanding of the challenges for performance management in such settings.
