National assessment of arsenic within groundwater: A case study with ireland

Abstract

The presence of arsenic in groundwater affects the safe distribution of potable water. Groundwater arsenic data from Ireland was analysed using various geostatistical techniques (including spatial interpolation methods). In some locations around Ireland, elevated arsenic is potentially linked to certain rock groups. In addition interpolation mapping has aided in identifying potential regional locations of arsenic contamination. This present study has, for the first time, mapped arsenic within groundwater in an EU nation to assess contamination and spatial distribution. It is envisioned that the methods and approach utilised in this study could be used by other nations for similar evaluations of arsenic in groundwater.
