Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities in the Irish Post-Primary Education Sector:  The educational landscape in Ireland is currently undergoing significant change. This is influenced in no small part by the poor results for reading attained by Irish 15 year olds in the 2009 Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA), which showed that more than 17%  were at a level of reading literacy considered to be below the minimum needed to participate effectively in society and future learning (Perkins et al. 2011). Since then, a programme of reform (Department of Education and Skills, 2013, 15) has prioritised the development of literacy by means of a national strategy (Department for Education and Skills, 2011); reform of junior cycle at second level (Department of Education and Skills, 2012a); school self-evaluation (Department of Education and Skills, 2012b); and changes to initial teacher education (Teaching Council, 2011).
