Abstract

Evaluation of experimental phantoms is a precursor step before the in vivo measurements. This paper presents the evaluation of a simplistic single-layered cylindrical-shaped 3D-printed human calcaneus bone phantom. The cylindrical phantom was filled with a liquid-based tissue-mimicking mixture for cortical bone and trabecular bone separately. A distorted Born iterative method approach in amalgamation with the iterative method with adaptive thresholding for compressed sensing has been employed for solving the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem. The results have shown that the dielectric properties of cortical bone and the trabecular bone can be reconstructed with acceptable accuracy. The adopted approach can be used to evaluate more realistic bone phantoms to monitor bone health.
