Abstract
A comprehensive Benefits Management Framework for collaborative projects is presented, emphasising the distinction between project objectives and project benefits or long-term value. Collaborative projects, involving diverse stakeholders and cultures, necessitate a specialised approach. The framework encompasses activities to identify, plan, pursue, and sustain benefits. The concept of projects as goal-oriented endeavours underscores their traits as open systems. Collaborative projects, are inherently complex due to cultural diversity and multiple stakeholder expectations. The distinction between project objectives and benefits is discussed, emphasising benefits as overarching, strategic outcomes. The Benefits Management Framework consists of four key activities: Identifying Expected Benefits, Planning Benefits Realisation, Pursuing Benefits Realisation, and Transferring & Sustaining Benefits. The process of identifying expected benefits entails setting a credible and inspiring benefits vision, aligning with stakeholders’ values. The subsequent steps involve planning the realisation of benefits, such as linking them to expectations. The Pursuing Benefits Realisation phase emphasises taking actions, addressing issues, and managing risks. Lastly, the Transfer and Sustain Benefits stage involves documenting lessons learned and facilitating smooth project transition to sustain benefits.
