Abstract

The luminescence properties of the Gd3+ ion in lanthanide borate glass were investigated and compared with those of Gd3+ in crystalline LaB3O6:Gd3+. The Judd-Ofelt parameters are obtained from absorption measurements and confirmed by measuring the decay time of the 6P 7 2-8S 7 2 emission transition. Fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) techniques are used to study the structure of the 6P 7 2 state in the glass and the vibronic emission transitions. A comparison is made with IR spectra.
