Abstract
The results of absorption, photoluminescence, and lifetime studies of MgNb2O6:Ni and ZnNb2O6:Ni are presented. The results for both materials are very similar, with emission wavelengths longer than those typically found in Ni-doped oxide systems, and considerably shorter decay times than those found in any other Ni2+-doped insulators. Evidence of cross-relaxation from the T-1(2) level has been observed for samples with a high Ni2+ content.
