Abstract

Addiction is a condition where tolerance is developted to a substance, with increased use of the substance. Feelings of withdrawal are observed when people continue to use the substance without self control. Addiction is not just limited to smoking, alcohol or drugs, but also applies to internet use, betting, shopping, sexual or eating habits. Many neuro chemical and neuro physiological changes may occur in addicted individuals in addition to changes in their lifestyles. As a consequence, the weakening of the immune system may lead to many infectious diseases. These infections can be divided into categories as sexually transmitted infections, respiratory infections, skin transmitted infections and other infections types (periodontal disease, endocarditis, hemoptysis). There is a need for using the classification systems in order to have a standard terminology; to collaborate with other disciplines; and to make public health nurses practice seen which has important roles to prevent, treat and promote the health in the individual, family and community level. Hence, the OMAHA is an efficient system to diagnose, prioritize, evaluate these problems , and to monitor the effects of the planned interventions for the addicted individuals and their families.
