Abstract

1. 1. The haemoglobins of the herring (Clupea harengus) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus) exhibit intraspecific variations when subjected to electrophoresis in agar gel at pH 7.3. 2. 2. The variations observed in herring haemoglobin are associated with an increase in length and possibly with sexual development. 3. 3. The variations observed in sprat haemoglobin are not length or maturity dependent and may be genetically determined. 4. 4. The results of electrophoretic analyses of the haemoglobin of these species, and of the haemoglobin of the pilchard (Clupea pilhardus) and shad (Alosa alosa) are discussed.
