Abstract
Display technology lies at the core of the majority of today's consumer electronic devices. From the flat-screen TVs in our living room, to smart-phones and tablets, to lowpower book-readers, display technology permeates the world of consumer electronics. With each new generation of products these displays become brighter, present sharper images, and consume less energy. For many years, the IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE) has provided a forum for presentation and dissemination of such ideas. This year I am very happy to introduce this Special Section of the IEEE/OSA journal of Display Technology which contains some detailed research papers drawn from the field of consumer electronic display technologies. A fourth paper presents a hardware engine, which is capable of controlling and refining image quality on electrophoretic displays in real time due to the temperature dependence and nonlinear response of such displays they require the use of adaptive techniques beyond the capabilities of pure software algorithms.
