Abstract
John Smiths Girl
Chewing Gum was made and shown at the London Film-Makers Co-op in 1976. Through
its wit and imagination this film challenged the pervasive form of British
avant garde experimentation at that moment structural materialism. Through a
close reading of its signifying process it can be seen to address the
mechanisms of mainstream cinema and the role of chance.
