Abstract
The technique of laser-induced fluorescence line narrowing is used to probe the inhomogeneously broadened 2E-4A2 transition of Cr3+ in the disordered crystalline material α-Al2xGa2(1-x)O3 where x=0.2. The observed emission from Cr3+ ions in specific local environments is consistent with that from Cr3+ in the ordered materials α-Al2O3 and α-Ga2O3. Measurements of the homogen eous linewidth at various temperatures indicate that the broadening mechanism associated with the tunneling modes of amorphous structures is not present in this material.
