First SCUBA submillimetre images and photometry of starburst galaxies and other AGNs [Abstract]

Abstract

We present the first SCUBA 850 micron and 450 micron images of starburst galaxies as well as imaging and photometric results for a range of AGNs. SCUBA is a twin-array camera with 37 pixels at 850 (or 750 600) microns observing simultaneously with 91 pixels at 450 (or 350) microns. The bolometers are cooled to less than 100mK for maximum sensitivity and the instantaneous field-of-view is 2.3 arcminutes. SCUBA is currently undergoing successful commissioning on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea and is producing spectacular data. The data reported here are mainly of the starburst galaxies NGC253 and M82. The central condensations of dust are cleary seen, and the spatial resolutions of 12 and 6 arcseconds enables fine details to be studied. The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068 shows both starburst and non- thermal emission. Other active galaxies, such as Cygnus-A are also dramatic in submillimetre imaging, showing the twin synchrotron lobes as well as the dust emission from the central galaxy
