Abstract
This paper describes a professional development programme made available to the staff of two urban gaelcholáistí. A course in CLIL was undertaken by two schools, and each member of staff achieved a Cambridge qualification at the end of the course.
Also reported here are the advantages, impact and challenges to the teachers as they taught their subjects through a second language, implementing CLIL strategies and best practice in their classrooms.
Notwithstanding the challenge of more time spent in lesson preparation, the course was found to be beneficial and the effort required worthwhile in order to implement CLIL successfully in the post-primary Irish-medium classroom.
