Abstract
My own mentor - 'a twentieth century eclectic', as Geoff Harcourt aptly described Richard Goodwin (Harcourt 1985)- entitled his planned essay in these volumes appropriately: 'Harcourt, Guide and Friend to Young and Old'. This is how I have known Geoff these past twenty-five years: as a guide and friend in my formative years; now, as I reach the end of my innings, he still remains a guide and friend to whom I turn, from time to time, for words of wisdom and advice in personal and professional matters. My own lasting regret in this friendship of a quarter of a century is that due to irrational expectations I missed the opportunity of opening batting with Geoff for Clare Hall.
