    Abstract

Solutions of 8-hydroxyquinoline in chloroform have been shown to extract the uranyl(VI) ion from aqueous carbonate media and from aqueous solutions of two phenylarsonic acid derivatives, as the species UO2(OX)2HOX. A method for calculating the overall stability constant, β3(c), of UO2(CO3)34- from the resultant distribution date is outlined. The value obtained is log β3(c) = 21·54 ± 0·03 at an ionic strength of 0·1 M.
