Abstract
We have examined the effect of acute administration of phencyclidine (PCP) and apomorphine (APO) on temperature and locomotor activity of the olfactory bulbectomised rat, as a measure of NMDA and dopamine receptor function. Male Sprague Dawley rats received an acute dose of either PCP (10 mg kg(-1)) or APO (1 mg kg(-1)) and their body temperature and locomotor activity were assessed. PCP administration had no effect on body temperature but produced a significant increase in the locomotor activity of sham (SO) animals as compared to olfactory bulbectomised (OB) animals. This may reflect alterations to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor complex. Changes in the dopaminergic system were also suggested since administration of APO significantly increased locomotor activity in OB animals. The effect of APO on body temperature was similar for both SO and OB animals, indicating that bulbectomy has no effect on dopamine D2 receptors.
