Abstract
This article argues that motte castles were not initially used as fortifications during the first few years of the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland. Furthermore, it is argued that the conquest of eastern Ireland, particularly the lordship of Leinster took a bit longer to achieve than has hitherto been argued by historians, in particular Goddard Orpen.
