Abstract

Higher order magnetic monopole charges, as discussed by Taubes, are shown to occur in a natural way in the dimensional reduction of higher order Chern classes. The case of reduction from six and eight dimensions to three dimensions, making use of the third and fourth Chern classes respectively, are considered in detail. The existence of a non-self dual SU(3) monopole is established as an example.
