Abstract
A rapid visual reconnaissance technique for benthic surveying of shallow soft bottom sediments provides quantitative and qualitative data on the sediment water interface, allowing inferences to be made on sediment health. The challenges of applying sediment profile imagery down to abyssal depths as part of the European Union-funded MAST III project ALIPOR were examined. Principal considerations included: addressing the effects of pressure and low temperature; maximizing sample number-deployment time ratio, facilitating ease of operation, and allowing ready access to generated images.
