Abstract
The importance of community-based mental health promotion is addressed in this chapter and the rationale for implementing community mental health promotion is outlined. Conceptual approaches to community practice are presented and a set of guiding principles are identified for implementing participative and empowering mental health promotion strategies at the community level. The complexity of implementing multicomponent and multilevel community interventions is addressed and structured frameworks for community-based intervention planning, implementation and evaluation are outlined. The strategies needed to guide the delivery of comprehensive community interventions and translate the concepts of community practice into reality are considered.
