Abstract
A design methodology is presented which is based on a restatement of the traditional transformer equations to include non-sinusoidal switching waveforms and high frequency skin and proximity effects. Core selection is determined by the optimum throughput of energy with minimum losses. Winding layout is optimised to minimise skin and proximity effects. Suitable approximations are presented to simplify calculations. A detailed design of a push-pull converter is presented to illustrate the methodology.
