Abstract
In this comprehensive study of the most influential of modern Irishmusicians, Sean Williams and Lillis Ó Laoire successfully combine athorough examination of the major themes and influences in JoeHeaneys life and performances with a painstaking contextualizationof the man and his art in the broader framework of Irish history. Asa critical biography, the text is more concerned with exploring themotives and methods of its subject than presenting a simplechronological narrative of his life (6). The result is an engagingand exhaustive study of the historical developments and socialrealities that impacted Heaneys attitudes, performance styles, andhis eventual rise to prominence as the sean-nós ( quot;old-style quot;) singerpar excellence.Alan P.
