Abstract
The refractive index of the atmosphere varies with wavelength, giving rise to the well known effect of Atmospheric Dispersion. We examine this and its correction in the context of the very high angular resolution expected of AO-corrected ELTs. However, all refraction effects (such as seeing) are intrinsically
chromatic and their full correction is evidently impossible with the purely reflective AO systems currently in
use. We therefore also examine all such effects known to us, to determine whether they will significantly impair the performance of 50- and 100-m ELTs.
