A review of the homogenity of print media and its influences on men with prostate cancer

Research output: Chapter in Book or Conference Publication/ProceedingConference Publicationpeer-review

Abstract

Men access information from numerous sources in relation to prostate cancer. Newspapers and popular print media are important health resources and forums to engage men with prostate cancer education. Prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer with one in eight Irish men being diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. It is evident from the literature that masculinity plays a role in how men perceive illness and has a profound effect on health, coping, quality of life, and psychological issues. The aim of this review is to critically examine the representation of hegemonic masculinity in print media and how this world view influences men with prostate cancer.
