Abstract
The genus Rhodymenia Greville 1830 [type species: R. palmetta sensu Greville = R. pseudopalmata (Lamouroux) Silva] has been conserved against Palmaria Stackhouse 1801 [type species: P. palmata (Linnaeus) Stackhouse = Rhodymenia palmata (Linnaeus) Greville]. Comparative studies of the anatomy and reproduction of these two species show that they are not congeneric and that there is little justification for the inclusion of Palmaria palmata in the family Rhodymeniaceae. A comparison of the genus Palmaria with the genera Halosaccion Kützing and Leptosarca Gepp & Gepp shows that anatomically and reproductively they are closely related. The creation of a new family, the Palmariaceae, is proposed to include these genera pending further information as to their life histories. The family Palmariaceae is provisionally retained within the order Rhodymeniales.
